Program Description

Event Details

Many Irish citizens in the 1800s suffered from dire poverty and oppression. When the repeated failure of the potato crop brought unrelenting hunger, many Irish people began to ask, should we go or should we stay?

Pat Commins of Dublin, Ireland, and Elizabeth Rice of Michigan have compiled true stories of Irish immigrants to Michigan in the 19th century — one story from each of Michigan’s 83 counties — to share the history of these people who came to Michigan to begin new lives.

Come and listen to the story of Midland County and others as we host Pat Commins and Elizabeth Rice, authors of Irish Immigrants in Michigan: A History in Stories.

This in-person event takes place Wednesday, November 16, at 7pm in the Orchard Room. Registration is not required, but please feel free to sign up if you would like an email reminder.

This program is cosponsored by the Midland Genealogical Society (http://mimgs.org/). It is free and open to the public.
